1800's Faceting

Have you ever seen an American faceting machine from the 1800s? This is the oldest one I’ve ever found. It was patented by Edward Passmore in 1892. This mechanical drawing shows us the early inclination in America to use a mast and quill design instead of the handpieces and jamb pegs that we’re being used in Europe at that time. The machine style didn’t really become popular until the 1940s but it’s very curious to see this design in the very first years of American faceting. Edward Passmore was from Hope, Rhode Island and is remembered as being a good cutter who cut local stones including some cats' eyes. #facetinghistory
